Behaviour flow chart

..it happens - flowchart

Today we talked about the fact that behaviour is learnt - and, as a result, must be taught.

We are questioning what the purpose of a consequence is. Is it to punish? Is it to make 'wrongs' right? Is it to change behaviour?

Have a think about scenarios that happen and whether this flow chart will help us resolve them.

Road blocks (things that make us stop and think) could be:

  • Why does it take more take?
  • Is it worth the extra time it takes?
  • Can we change behaviours without developing empathy?
What tool can we use to test this model?

Matariki Studies

Lately in our class and throughout our team we've had a focus on Matariki. If you didn't already know Matariki is a star consultation and it is a Maori tradition to celebrate this. For more information on Matariki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matariki

Throughout Team 3 we've been working in groups or by our self and the criteria is to make some kind of presentation to represent Matariki that might be through a play re telling the myth or a dance a movie, one group even have made a finger puppet show!

My group made a music video for 'Starry Eyed - By Ellie Goulding', focusing more on the actual star consultation. This is how it turned out: VIDEO

I've personally learnt more about Matariki during these few weeks. In class we are now doing Myth writing for Matariki, we are inventing a different scenario how the stars came to being in the sky.

Leading by example

Special congrats to our lovely Lauren on her selection into the Raroa Student Leaders group - announced today! Cam, Cam and Lauren have enjoyed having opportunities to work on and share aspects of leadership this week. Well done to you all. Special congrats to Los - she is such a great leader in class; it's neat to see her skills, initiative and effort being rewarded!

Great news on Friday...

Massive congrats to our four Cross Country runners who all finished top 12 today at the Inter-Ints out at Trentham with Malachi (12th), Henry (10th) and Jemma (9th). Our man of the hour was Barker who ran a stunning race to be the overall Year 8 winner. We are super proud of you all as we know this was a combination of persistence, hard work and talent. We know the effort you have out in - proof hard work pays off! Super proud of you. Massive thanks to John who helped train you to get those awesome results!

Please explain yourself!!!

For the next few weeks, we will be learning about how to write explanations.
These photos show our first session. We deconstructed an explanation to see how it's written.

Explanations

Linking in with our inquiry work, we are preparing for a focus on explanations. Today we deconstructed one about 'how sugar affects the brain'. Revisit this link if you want to remind yourself.

Goals

Remember to keep chipping away at these.... Here's an old favourite from 'the olden days' you might like if you need basic facts practice....

Physics is starting to gain momentum (no pun intended)

Check out this link - I love the tea bag one, but be careful if trying to play with iPods or phones - expensive to drop! Friday will be fun...think big sling shots, rugby field, launching targets and estimating distance gained etc.

STOP BULLYING

NEXT Friday (May 22nd) is a day set aside to make a stand against bullies. Many people get confused about what bullying is. Generally it is accepted as repeated deliberate incidents to dis-empower others. It isn't always easy to do that though. What strategies do you know to help out with this issue? It seems that the problem is growing with the rise of social media (although that is only one form of bullying). Songs are really powerful ways of getting messages across - what do you think of this one? Song about bullies Wear pink this Friday.... in support of MAKE A STAND AGAINST BULLIES

Anzac Studies - Dawn Parade

We have been looking at WW1 and the ANZACs. This of course is to do with the centennial ANZAC commemoration that was held on Saturday. We were lucky enough to have Luke come in. He told us about what his work as a builder / engineer in the Army. It was interesting that his focus is on helping to rebuild communities. Room 12 decided to take this a step further...

We went to the Dawn Parade! Most of us got up anywhere in between 3:00-3:30am because the train that left at 4:05 from Johnsonville station.  As we entered the dawn parade we found a reasonably good spot to observe from. It would have been good to get closer, but with over 40,000 people there it was always going to be a challenge.

We think that this was an experience that we will never forget. To our understanding, we are one of very few classes in NZ to have done this and we have created a memory that we will never forget.

May the force be with you...

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.....We have started Physics 101. Let's just hope the force is with us! To get our brains thinking, We did things such as create a human table (photo below) where we lay down on top of each other to form this....
Then we took the chairs away! We worked out how to do this successfully by taking away the chairs from the person's lowest body mass to the person who had the most body mass.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJxw_kjZoo
We also did things such as...
  • Underlying knowledge about centripetal force by trying to keep the water in the cup while spinning it round.
  • Finding the perfect arm wrestling buddy.
  • Exploring unbalanced and balanced forces by playing tug of war
Physics is our inquiry this term - let's see where this takes us...

Library orientation

With the help of our fabulous library staff, we all know how to make use of the library. Showing our persistence and independence to develop our reading will be important this year - especially for the Year 8's to be ready for college.  Everyone should be reading at least 20 minutes a night. Find a bookworm if you need ideas, or take a friend to the library and talk to Clare or Sian.  Remember, you are welcome to borrow any of Ms H's books too.

Athletics Day 2015

Athletics Day 2015 was a blast! Room 12 is full of superstars! We have some 'athletics geeks' but there was no one in Room 12 who wasn't giving it their best shot! Jemma won the vortex and was the only girl in her year group to throw more than 28 metres and she threw a whopping 32 metres! Barker won
800m and 1500m sprints.

The weather was amazing, (we couldn't have asked for better weather.) We were all out there supporting our houses. TONGA, RAKI ,URU and RAWHITI!We trained hard and the results showed.
Nice one Room 12!

Life Of A Year 7 At Raroa

Welcome To Room 12

Here's a quote we quite like
How do you describe Room 12? It's hard to, I've got to be honest. In the last week or so we have had shy year 7's that already aren't really shy any more. Maybe it was the Year 8 Role Models... or was it that they just needed to warm up to Raroa before they came out of their shell? We've been busy bees here in  Room 12. We've been making friends, training for athletics, doing tests, DPE, Some artwork that the parents will see when they come to meet Miss Herbert (Room 12's wonderful teacher!) A few quick things about our class. We're committed, team players, respectful and an overall good class. There are many other qualities to our class that we haven't yet learnt but time will tell as we see how much we can learn about each and every one in our class and the things you didn't know even about yourself.
